P5 Iron Men Models

Christine suggested we put some photos of our fantastic Iron Men Models on our Den so here they are !
The task was to design and build a model of the Iron Man but the challenge was to make sure that the model Iron Man could stand upright on its own. This model below was cleverly built with cans for legs as it could stand firmly taking the weight of the body and head.

These Iron men models were successful as they met they fulfilled the  challenge of being able to stand independently. The middle model had cans for legs which could take the weight of the model. The models on the right and left could not stand initially but then the use of egg boxes to attach the legs to solved this problem .
Pupils had to use their creativity and thinking skills to work out how their models could stand independently.

P5 Trip to Mosque

P5 all really enjoyed our trip to the Glasgow Central Mosque on Wednesday 20th October.  We were given a guided tour amd saw the wuzu ( washrooms), stunning main prayer hall with the ornate 'Minbar' chair and ladies' prayer hall with its unusual carpet.
Mums and Dads - do you know why the carpet in the main prayer hall is green with horizontal white lines on it ? Ask your son and daughter and they will tell you why !
Also, why are there 6 clocks in the entrance hall ? I'm sure your child will be able to give you the answer!

DRAGONS !!!

New Topic

We all really enjoyed reading the Iron Man and the pupils made some fabulous model iron men of their own, some of them even had moving parts !  Impressive !

After the September weekend we are going to start our new book study called Dragons Breath. It is a fantastic story about a mysterious dragon and I'm sure the children will all really enjoy it and will have the chance to write their own scary stories about dragons.

To tie in with this topic we will be researching and learning about reptiles so if Mums and Dads can help the pupils to find out any information on this topic that would be fabulous. In addition it would be super if you can find any good books on reptiles that you can bring in and share with the class. So try getting along to the library to see what you can find !

Termly Update : September 2010

This term, we are studying the novel The Iron Man by Ted Hughes and we will base our art, technology and writing on the story.  Our Religious & Moral Education topic is Hinduism and, in particular,  the story of Rama and Sita.  PE days are Wednesday and Thursday so please ensure your child does not wear earrings on those days. Primary 5 teachers would be very grateful if pupils could bring a pencil case to school with sharp pencils, a rubber, sharpener and a glue stick.
Many thanks.
